Death Doula Support

Find a guardian of presence at your threshold.

At the Academy of Living and Dying, our death doulas offer compassionate, non-medical support for those approaching death and for the families who love them. We sit beside the dying person, hold space for what is unfolding, and help bring steadiness, tenderness, ritual, and care to one of life’s most sacred transitions.

Why This Work Exists

Most people die inside systems that were not designed for intimacy. Hospitals and clinics are often built for efficiency, not presence. Families arrive emotionally unprepared, unsure what to say, what to do, or how to be with what is happening.

Death can become something shocking to manage instead of something sacred to meet. This is why death doulas matter.

Dying is deeply human, deeply vulnerable, and often deeply lonely without support. A death doula helps return what the modern world has slowly forgotten: presence, tenderness, ritual, time, honesty, and love at the threshold of life.

When To Call A Death Doula

“It may be days now.”

When a doctor says this, that is when you call us.

You may also reach out earlier if you or someone you love has received a terminal diagnosis, is entering hospice, is actively declining, or feels afraid and unsupported in the dying process.

After an initial consultation, we assess what is needed and whether in-person death doula support is aligned. When appropriate, a death doula can travel to you and remain close during the final days.

What Death Doula Support Includes

  • In-person presence during the final days of life
  • Emotional and spiritual support for the dying person
  • Support for family members and loved ones
  • Guidance around what may happen as the body begins to shut down
  • Creating a peaceful and intentional environment
  • Ritual, prayer, silence, music, or bedside practices according to your wishes
  • Support with communication, closure, and final conversations
  • Presence during active dying
  • After-death support for the first waves of grief

After Death

After death, we remain with the family and loved ones as the first waves of grief arrive. This may include quiet presence, emotional support, ritual, grounding, guidance, and helping the family enter the grieving process with more support and less shock.

Death does not end the need for care. The first moments after a death matter.

Contribution-Based Support

Death doula accompaniment begins at $5,000.

This contribution supports the presence, preparation, travel, and availability of your death doula during the final days of life.

Support is typically between 3 and 5 days, depending on the situation and what is needed. Travel and accommodation needs are discussed during the consultation.

Death doula support is not only a service. It is a practice of relationship with mortality.

At the Academy of Living and Dying, our death doulas are trained to meet death with presence, steadiness, humility, and reverence. We listen deeply. We feel into what is needed. We support the dying person, the family, and the sacred transition taking place.
